Brief geochemical explanation for the burning flames found at the Chimaera

The fire is generated from combustion (burning) of methane gas formed in very deep underground rocks, which seeps through rock fractures and comes into contact with oxygen in air at the surface.  This burning reaction produces carbon dioxide and water.  Methane is one of the main components of natural gas. Scientists agree that the origin of the methane gas is NOT volcanic.  However, they still don’t agree about its exact origin:  Some believe both biological and non-biological processes are occurring, while others more recently say that the processes are mostly non-biological. The biological source may be sedimentary rocks rich in organic material, which upon decomposition in the absence of oxygen form methane. The non-biological sources are rocks (such as olivine) that in contact with water and carbon dioxide form methane.  Apparently, for this to happen at the low temperatures present in the Chimaera a metal catalyst is required, and recently ruthenium metal has been discovered in the underlying rocks as the potential catalyst responsible for this methane production. The fluxes of methane in the Chimaera are at least 150 to 190 tons per year! written by ; Mario Villalobos Penalosa 8/2/2015

Cirali a quiet retreat for stressed-out city dwellers

If you want to see a place were time has stood still in Turkey and experience what Turkey used to be like about 15 to 20 yrs ago before the influx of all-inclusive and package holidays of the last decade, then Cirali is the place for this..Cirali is a quiet alternative….stunning beach, lush forests..an idyllic, concrete-free paradise, and sparkling clear seas. The Cirali Beach is also a rare opportunity to visit one of the Med’s few remaining nesting sites for loggerhead turtles. Also for history seekers , there is the ruins of Olympos and the flames of “Chimaera” the world”s oldest and best-known natural “eternal flame”.

Cirali: Turkey’s total chillout zone

Jeremy Seal Published: 8 February 2015 Proud and peaceful, with not a nightclub in sight, it’s the resort to visit in 2015 Every Turkish resort has its own vibe, not always to everyone’s taste. If you found Kalkan too classy-brassy, or Bodrum one big but exhausting party, then descend the only road into Cirali, a little lost lane that hairpins through citrus groves, pomegranate orchards and occasional farmsteads above a blissfully unspoilt beach. Cirali, a secluded village resort below the Bey mountains, south of Antalya, is Turkey at its most laid-back. It’s an atmosphere its eco-minded locals have fought tooth and nail to protect. Had you been on that road in May 2012, you would have found cars, vans, tractors and donkey carts blocking the way, combining to prevent a group of high-rise developers getting through with their bulldozers and concrete mixers.
